Back into classrooms today. It’s been awhile. We were trying to put photos of the class trip to Raglan into Photostory so we could record their thoughts and ideas about their day out. It was a bigger undertaking than we thought. Had problems with the data projector then we couldn’t import the photos. We achieved the title page and they all helped record it. They were hooked and wanted more. Hope I can get back in their next week to work on it some more. After interval, I had 19 5 year olds in the computer suite using Kidpix. For one little boy it was his first day at school and first turn on a computer. He soon had the hang of the mouse and was drawing along with the others. We modeled lots of crabs for them to draw and let them loose and soon collected a wonderful collection of their drawings of crabs at Raglan. We printed them out ready to display on the wall in the suite for everyone to see. Must take my camera next time.

An intensive three days at Sky City in Auckland. It was great to be joined by 6 teachers from Fairfield Primary and 2 from Insoll.
“The ULearn07 programme is structured around Ten Key Questions focusing on the themes of ‘learning’ and ‘leading’.
These questions allowed attendees to focus on 1 idea or to cover as many as you could.
The key messages for me were about connecting with our kids and engaging them in their learning and the power of Web 2.0. For those of you who are haven’t ventured there yet, web 2.0 offers an ever increasing range of new technologies that are free and allow our students to interact with anyone, anywhere, anytime.
The opening keynote was Ewan McIntosh. Ewan McIntosh is an educational technologist and teacher of French and German. He is based in Edinburgh and leads student and teacher workshops in the UK and Europe. Ewan engaged the audience with his sense of humour and many examples of kids using web 2.0. It was a taster to his workshop in week 1. View Ewan’s keynote here.
Another highlight was a breakout with Tony Ryan followed by his keynote. In his breakout Tony, talked about helping our kids to succeed in our world before they can interact in web 2.0. He had plenty of strategies to get us to interact with others in the breakout and kept us enthused and motivated, plus we got to meet lots of new people. His message in the keynote was ‘making a difference.’ What difference will our attendance at the conference make in our schools and clusters. It will be interesting to meet with those that attended and gain their thoughts and insights.

In Week 9 of the term, Bernard, Donna (Rosetown Cluster) and myself travelled to Gisborne and Ruatoria to learn about their Ngati awards. Schools in the area around Ruatoria gather to celebrate their learning through ICT. During the day, a team from each school competed in the ICT challenge. Teams were given a scenario which included elements of ICT. They were given two and three quarters of an hour to complete their presentation and then presented this orally and visually to the audience. No teachers allowed. There was a wealth of creativity and expertise from the teams. That evening, we attended the Ngati awards for all students from Year 0 - 13. Some categories were:
It was like being at the Oscars. We watched the finalists in each category before the winner was announced. It was a delight to see the depth of their learning shared. The standard was extremely high and the students very talented.
We were welcomed to Hiruharama School and talked to the teachers and students about inquiry and how they fitted this with the Ngati awards.
We also visited Wainui Beach School and were treated to an explicit lesson on thinking skills. The teacher was using a combination of 6 hats and thinking maps to involve the students in creating solutions to a bullying issue.
