Ngati Awards

In Week 9 of the term, Bernard, Donna (Rosetown Cluster) and myself travelled to Gisborne and Ruatoria to learn about their Ngati awards. Schools in the area around Ruatoria gather to celebrate their learning through ICT. During the day, a team from each school competed in the ICT challenge. Teams were given a scenario which included elements of ICT. They were given two and three quarters of an hour to complete their presentation and then presented this orally and visually to the audience. No teachers allowed. There was a wealth of creativity and expertise from the teams. That evening, we attended the Ngati awards for all students from Year 0 - 13. Some categories were:

  • best animation
  • documentary
  • digital photo
  • fiction story
  • non- fiction story
  • music video

It was like being at the Oscars. We watched the finalists in each category before the winner was announced. It was a delight to see the depth of their learning shared. The standard was extremely high and the students very talented.

We were welcomed to Hiruharama School and talked to the teachers and students about inquiry and how they fitted this with the Ngati awards.

We also visited Wainui Beach School and were treated to an explicit lesson on thinking skills. The teacher was using a combination of 6 hats and thinking maps to involve the students in creating solutions to a bullying issue.
